What We Did on Our Summer Vacation 2005
That's a good place to start. The house project is pretty clear on the right side of the website. More than that we had a great time exploring the area. It's home of America's Wild Rivers and we had a channce to go up the Elk and Sixes Rivers for day outings. The rivers in the summers are great.

The Forth of July was a fun time. A parade and fireworks. THe best fireworksd show that I'd ever seen. Right over Battle Rock. A really big show just about 200 yards away. More intimate than say... Sea World.

Amy was the fundraising Chairperson for the Port Orford Jubilee Committee. They raised the $$ for the fireworks.

We had a few friends visit. Both families stayed in the campground at Humbug State Park.

We saw lots of stars, like we'd never seen before. Shooting stars too!

If you look at the pictures liked above, you'lll see that there were days of fine surfing and we had great beach days.

The Departure
It was almost surreal. After months of planning, packing, forgetting and gathering I found myself and my family heading north out of San Diego. For how long I wasn't sure. We had packed about half of our belongings and set out for our own Oregon Trail.

Twilight had been repalced by the steady stream of white and red lights in both directions. The next 120 miles would be landscaped with concrete and asphalt.

Once you got past L.A. the traffic wasn't bad, we missed the rains by a week. Some of the roads had seen mudslides.

Amy drove the Toyota Sienna with Jason and Jonathan. I was in my car following.

We stayed the first night in Buttonwillow. The second night (Wednesday) in Livermore and headed to Hopland, CA to visit Real Goods.

On Thursday night we stayed in Eureka.

Our last travel day has become a ritual of visiting one of the redwood forests and a stop at the Noll Surf Shop in Crescent City. From that point it's a few short hours to Port Orford. A beautifiul drive along the coast. Breathtaking.

Here is a link to our home for the next three months, staying at a vacation rental home, The Joan of Arc vacation rental. It's a 1920's home.

Before and After!
The siding on the gable end makes a big difference. The walls on the front will be plastered.

Doors! That's One Small Step.....

Here's the Latest! Happy Mother's Day!

Here's the Latest... Family and Friends!

A Few Small Steps...

Here's Jason after some siding and window framing is near done. "Get it done"!

Time Out, It's Game Time! We put up a basketball hoop inside what's going to be the living room. All-comers welcome. There is definately a home court advantage.

The House Building Project: The Latest View!

Got Wood?
Time to Get Some More Wood! After cutting some trees down near the house, here's Jonathan at the end of the day. We pulled about 10 logs out of the forest and had them cut into usable lumber. They'll be used for flooring, paneling and decking.

Before and After

It's a Family Affair!
Everyone chips in to help Bruce our wood sawing man. He's using a "Wood-Mizer" portable saw mill to cut up the logs in to 1" and 2" rough-sawn lumber. We're sawing Douglas Fir, Port Orford Cedar and Hemlock.

Up on the Roof - Again!
Neither rain nor hail nor wind stops the crew. Really! In between high wind warnings.

Up on the Roof - It's a Treetop View!!
The steel roof is finally turning the corner. The color is Kelly Green. Forest Green would be redundant! :)

It's the Weekend Work Crew.

The Front Porch Framing is Complete!

The Front Porch Taking Shape.

It's a Nice Workshop - for the Time Being.

These are the hand-peeled Douglas Fir poles will form the supports for the front porch. The poles were harvested from the Elk River about four miles to the north.

A Roof Over Our Head: Finally getting shelter from the storm.

Getting Started in the Morning: A Cup of Joe to get going in the morning. It's a long way to the closest Starbucks. This picture was during the framing stage. (2005-10-05)

From the Ground Up: The foundation was created on the level pad after the pad was cut down removing the organic material (nature's compost).
